I went to my first Baat mitzvah for a daughter of a friend. Religion is not a topic we frequent. I do care about our relationship.
To me, it seemed like any other religious rite until the sermon by the Rabbi and subsequent, open prayer was offered to some peers at the event. I noticed quickly that the word "we" did not include ME as a gentile, even while I was breathing the same air in the same room. They spoke of "Their Nation" while sitting in the sanctuary of SouthWest, USA. OUR nation.
To them "home" is not a location for the body, but their spiritual connection to some real-estate in the middle east.
It was unsettling to see how unapologetically this happened. I was indeed, an outsider.
For the purpose of timeline, this was also at the same time the reports were crowning 50k dead and starving Palestinians, and I was waiting for OCT 7 to come up, upon which I would have to walk out. I know not to hate by proxy, but I definitely learned that there is some truths. There is a bit of Zionist in all of them.
It galvanizes my idea that the marriage of religion and politics has always ended in self purging when extremism occupies the lawmakers, making themselves lawfully corrupted. This bodes the same for all fanaticism.
